Full stack java developer
You own a feature end to end - from the Java service that implements the business logic to the React/Angular screen a user actually clicks through.
Full stack in name only is common: a lot of "full stack" hires default to backend and treat the UI as someone else's problem, or the reverse. This role is for an engineer who's genuinely comfortable on both sides - writing clean, well-tested Java services with Spring Boot, and building the frontend that consumes them, without needing a handoff in either direction.
You'll design and build REST APIs and backend services in Java/Spring Boot, model and query data across relational and/or NoSQL stores, and build the corresponding UI in Angular or React - then take the whole thing through code review, testing and CI/CD into a deployed, working feature.
Who thrives here
Engineers who don't want to pick a lane - who'd rather understand a feature from database schema to button click than own one layer of it. You write Java the way you'd want to read it back, and you're just as comfortable debugging a REST call in Postman as a rendering bug in the browser.
What you'll own
- Design, develop and maintain backend services and REST APIs using Java and Spring Boot
- Build and maintain frontend applications using Angular or React
- Design data models, write efficient queries, and integrate with relational and/or NoSQL databases
- Write clean, reusable, well-tested code across the stack (JUnit/Mockito on the backend, appropriate frameworks on the frontend)
- Implement authentication, authorisation and API security best practices
- Participate in system/API design discussions and code reviews
- Debug and resolve issues across the full stack - backend services, APIs, frontend and database
- Integrate services with CI/CD pipelines and support deployment to test/staging/production environments
- Collaborate with QA, product and other engineers through the full feature lifecycle
- Participate in Agile ceremonies: sprint planning, grooming, stand-ups and retrospectives
What it takes
- 3-5 years of full stack development experience
- Strong hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot, and Spring MVC/Spring Data
- Experience with Hibernate/JPA and ORM concepts
- Strong experience building and consuming REST APIs
- Hands-on frontend development experience with Angular or React, plus solid JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML and CSS
- Good understanding of microservices architecture
- Experience with SQL databases; NoSQL experience a plus
- Git/version control and familiarity with CI/CD tools
- Unit and integration testing experience (JUnit, Mockito, or equivalent)
- Good analytical, debugging and communication skills
Nice to have
- Docker and Kubernetes exposure
- Experience with a cloud platform (AWS, Azure or GCP)
- Messaging/event-streaming platforms such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
- GraphQL
- Frontend testing frameworks such as Jest or Jasmine
- Agile/Scrum project experience
